Welcome to the Chair of English Linguistics!
The Chair of English Linguistics is part of the English and American Studies department at the University of Bayreuth. The study of English linguistics at the University of Bayreuth has its focus on English as a world language and the use of language in cultural contact zones. Our research is committed to the investigation of varieties of English in African, Caribbean, US American as well as Asian contexts. As member of the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple", the graduate school Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) as well as the Bayreuther Institut für Amerikastudien (BIFAS) we collaborate with researchers across disciplines and continents. But we also look at what speakers around the world do with language, and how. Politeness phenomena are therefore just as present in our research and teaching as the exploration of language and food or metaphors used in political discourse or football.
